How to organize your Chrome bookmarks
Published
In short: Open the Bookmark Manager (More > Bookmarks and lists > Bookmark Manager). Add folders, drag bookmarks into them, then use More > Sort by name.[1] To find one fast, type @bookmarks in the address bar and press Tab.[1]
Bookmarks pile up quietly. One day you scroll a list of 300 links with names like "Untitled" and give up. Ten minutes of sorting fixes that.
1. Create a few folders
- Select More > Bookmarks and lists > Bookmark Manager.
- At the top right, select More > Add new folder.[1]
Using the bookmarks bar? Right-click it and select Add Folder.[1] Keep it to a handful: Work, Read later, Tools, Personal. Fewer folders means fewer places to search.
2. Move bookmarks into them
In the Bookmark Manager, drag a bookmark up or down, or into a folder on the left. Copy and paste works too.[1] On the bookmarks bar, just drag them into the order you want.[1]
3. Sort and rename
- Sort: in the Bookmark Manager, More > Sort by name. In the side panel (More > Bookmarks and lists > Show all bookmarks), select Organize to sort by newest, oldest, last opened, A to Z or Z to A.[1]
- Rename: More > Edit next to a bookmark. In the side panel, Edit lets you change several at once.[1]
4. Find any bookmark in two seconds
Type @bookmarks in the address bar, press Tab or Space, then a few keywords.[1] Good names pay off here. Want to bookmark a whole window in one go? See how to save all open tabs.
The limits
- Deleting is final. Google's help says it plainly: after you delete a bookmark, you can't get it back.[1]
- Bookmarks don't close tabs. Saving a page as a bookmark leaves the tab open. Your tab strip stays just as crowded.
- No context. A bookmark has no record of which tabs were open together or why.
Close tabs without fear. Keeptab saves your tabs in one click, backs them up every hour and notes your open tabs every 5 minutes. Free for Chrome.
Add to Chrome — it's freeFor tabs, a list beats a bookmark
Bookmarks are great for sites you visit every week. For the 30 tabs of a project you'll finish later, Keeptab, our free Chrome extension, saves them as one list in a click and closes them.[2] The list is written and read back before any tab closes, and tab groups keep their name and color.[2]
Search by word, date or site, and a deleted list waits 30 days in the trash.[2]
