Chrome tab groups disappeared? Here is where they went
Published
In short: In Chrome, a closed group isn't deleted: it is saved in the bookmarks bar or in the menu (More › Tab groups).[1] But “Delete group” and “Ungroup” are different: they also remove the group on your other devices signed in to the same account.[1]
Your tab groups are gone
You had your work neatly sorted into colored groups. You open Chrome, and they are not there. Before you panic, know this: Chrome has three ways to make a group leave your screen, and only some of them are final.
Where to look first
Google's help says: “A closed group isn't deleted and is saved in the bookmarks bar or in the menu.”[1] So check:
- The bookmarks bar. Closed groups can appear there. Press Ctrl + Shift + B (⌘ + Shift + B on Mac) if the bar is hidden.
- The menu. Select More (the three dots) › Tab groups, then pick the group to reopen it.[1]
- Settings › Appearance. Two options control this: “Show tab groups in bookmarks bar” and “Automatically pin new tab groups to the bookmarks bar”.[1] If the first is off, your saved groups will not show in the bar.
Tab groups are saved and synced when your browsing history and tabs are synced.[1] To turn that on: More › Settings › You and Google › your account › “History and tabs”.[2]
Close, delete, ungroup: not the same thing
| Action | What happens |
|---|---|
| Close group | The tabs close, but the group is saved (bookmarks bar or More › Tab groups).[1] |
| Delete group | The group and its tabs are removed, also on other devices with the same account.[1] |
| Ungroup | The tabs stay open but leave the group. The group is removed on other devices with the same account.[1] |
If you deleted a group, Ctrl + Shift + T (⌘ + Shift + T on Mac) reopens recently closed tabs and windows.[1] Our guide to recovering tabs after a Chrome crash lists other places to look, like History.
The limits of tab groups
- One wrong click spreads. Deleting or ungrouping on one computer also removes the group on your others.[1]
- No trash. Google's help does not describe a way to bring back a deleted group.
- Sync depends on your account settings. Without “History and tabs” turned on, groups are not synced.[1][2]

Keeptab is a free tab manager for Chrome, made by us. It was built for one job: stop losing your tabs.
- One click saves your open tabs into a list and closes them.
- Automatic backup every hour, and a note of your open tabs every 5 minutes in case Chrome crashes.
- A 30-day trash: a list you delete can still be brought back.
- A daily backup file that survives even if you uninstall the extension.
- OneTab import in one paste, if you are moving from it.
Keeptab Sync, to get your lists on several computers, is an optional paid add-on. Everything else is free.
FAQ
Where did my Chrome tab groups go?
If you closed a group, Chrome saved it. Look in the bookmarks bar or in More › Tab groups. Google Chrome Help says a closed group isn't deleted.
What is the difference between closing and deleting a tab group?
Closing a group saves it so you can reopen it. Deleting a group removes it, also on other devices signed in to the same account (Google Chrome Help, Manage tabs in Chrome).
Why are my tab groups not in the bookmarks bar?
Check Settings › Appearance › “Show tab groups in bookmarks bar”. If it is off, saved groups do not show there. You can still find them in More › Tab groups (Google Chrome Help).
